Koh Tao, A Mermaid’s Tale

As most of you now know I am an official water baby, I have been a swimmer my whole life and there’s something about being in the water that just makes me feel at peace. I was actually scared to swim in the sea when I was younger as I was never given the opportunity to do it until I was 15, on our first family holiday to Turkey. I remember jumping in and freezing with fear about what was beneath me, flinching and squealing every time I thought something brushed past me, yet all the while, I knew I loved the idea of the sea and the undiscovered world in the water.

So when I was 16 my mum and I both decided to get our PADI diving licences together in Egypt. To this day, it’s one of the best things I ever did. I am now an advanced diver with over 60 dives under my belt and a love affair with the ocean whether or not my tank is on! Even after learning to dive, snorkeling freaked me out as I wanted to be able to be more aware of what was beneath and around me. When you have your tank on in the water you feel almost invincible, excusing the obvious pun you feel ‘a part of that world’.

Now after all these years my diving has cured my fear of snorkeling, sometimes the expression of being ‘stuck right in the thick of things’ really does come up true!  I am now so comfortable with the ocean you could pretty much chuck me off a boat anywhere and I’d happily splash away with glee 🙂

So when my friend Aimee bought me a FREAKING MERMAID TAIL for my christmas present I couldn’t have been more ecstatic receiving a gift! Whilst we were both in Thailand last month we decided to give our fins a go 😉

We spoke to the dive centre at our resort, Amari Koh Samui and booked ourselves a private boat with a skipper and dive instructor.

The boat took us out to two dive sites and a few great spots to snorkel as well as looping the famous island of Koh Tao. My first dive was at Sail Rock , the rock rises up 8m to the surface and the site has a depth visibility of 40m . Aimee is not a certified diver so I went down on my own with my PADI instructor and we were lucky enough to be surrounded by fish at every turn, it has a number of narrow chimneys too so the challenge of rising through them was really fun!  After we moved on from Sail Rock our instructor took Aimee out for an intro dive in shallower waters whilst I nestled in amongst the fishes!

The visibility wasn’t at it’s best because of the time of year and the frequent rain during our stay but the shoals of fish were a really incredible sight to see! After our dives we spent the rest of the day snorkeling in the secluded bays of Koh Tao. The boat provided a yummy veggie lunch for us on board too as well as unlimited soft drinks.

Hiring a private charter boat is much more expensive that going on a group trip but we were able to fully dictate our day and plan our route according to the busier spots in Koh Tao, at one point Aimee and I had an entire dive site to ourselves, you just don’t get that on a group trip!! The beaches in Koh Tao can get very crowded so it’s amazing to be able to explore on water. This side of Thailand is exactly what you expect to see, it’s post card perfect and exactly what the glossy Asia magazines would show off, I highly recommend if you are basing yourself in Koh Samui that you get a boat trip out to Koh Tao for a day or two.

I think this is my favourite video yet!! The footage is incredible!! The visibility actually looks much better than what we had in The Maldives.

Oh thank you hun! I would live in the sea if I could! Yeas we were so lucky! I am surprised about the Maldives, it’s usually crystal clear there. You’ll have to head to Koh Tao 😉 x
