Minos Beach Art Hotel, A Wedding Abroad

My big sister got married!!!!! She chose the perfect place to do it too, Minos Beach Art Hotel. Just a few weeks ago my amazingly awesome big sis tied the knot. Her and her handsome beau entered into the world of sharing a surname as well as everything else in their lives 😉 It was the best day ever seeing my sister wed, she looked absolutely stunning and the whole wedding was simply perfect!

Samantha opted to get married abroad as a lot of people do nowadays, choosing warm weather and pretty unique scenery over a big expensive affair in the UK. I personally love abroad weddings and had I have married someone other than Mr Chakici (who seems to know every Turkish person in London therefore needed a 350 person wedding!) I would have also opted for a smaller wedding by the sea.

My sister did just that, in fact, her and her hubby exchanged their vows just a few steps away from the ocean.

She had travelled to Crete the year before for a holiday where she also spent a week at Minos Beach Art Hotel. So when it came to where to get married, Samantha had fallen in love with the beautiful seclusion of Minos Beach and decided that it would be the perfect place for her wedding and so a year later, we all travelled out to Crete for the big day and from the moment we arrived at the hotel we saw exactly why my sister fell in love with it!

The hotel is based in the small picturesque town of Agios Nikolas a 50 minute drive from Heraklion Airport. Upon our arrival we were taken back by the contemporary yet traditional style of the hotel. With grand art pieces and sculptures placed beautifully in what seems like every corner it’s easy to see why the hotel is so aptly named!

After check-in we headed down to our room through the pretty cobbled walkways towards the sea. We were lucky enough to being staying in a double seafront room with a private pool which was a real treat for the entire wedding party!

The room was nice and large with all the amenities required for a week’s stay and we found it very hard to leave our little heaven often opting for room service breakfast and lunch 😉 The rest of the wedding party popped round daily to enjoy the view and a splash in the pool. Our room was also perfect for Samantha’s pre-wedding snaps!

We ate at the hotel’s main restaurant, Bacchus every evening which is one of the four restaurants within the hotel, the daily alternating menu had three options for a main dish with an additional buffet for appetisers and salads. We loved the concept of being able to fine dine whilst also filling up on yummy salads and hot starters whilst waiting for the main dishes.

The hotel has a really unique design with rooms situated on varying levels surrounding the rocky coastline. Most rooms have a sea view and each have dedicated sunbathing areas with direct access to the water. Umbrellas, sun beds and sun towels are provided per room and changed daily. There’s two beaches for those needing to feel the sand between their toes and a dedicated sports centre for fun on and in the water. The hotel offers scuba diving options as well as banana boat rides, windsurfing and sailing. The hotel also offers boat rental options and day trips over to the historic and fascinating island of Spinalonga.

We travelled at the beginning of peak season so the hotel was still getting into the swing of things and the weather let us down a few days but in the glory of summer the hotel also has a funky beach hangout called Pure Beach Lounge which is where we enjoyed part of the wedding reception. This particular spot is great for hotel guests to grab a delicious lunch by the sea during the day or sip cocktails on the comfy bean bags whilst the sun goes down.

The hotel’s location is perfect for exploring Crete. The local nightlife is great and there’s a number of restaurants and bars within walking distance from the hotel. There’s also the cute and colourful local town you can easily stroll to for a spot of souvenir shopping or just to enjoy the picturesque architecture. I’ll be writing a full post about the local area and what we got up to soon so will cover more about Agios Nikolas then 😉

This hotel will always be so special to me as it’s the place my sister became a wife, that being said the hotel would have capture my heart even if it weren’t for the wedding. Being surrounded by water gets me every time. The room was fantastic, food brilliant, staff attentive and helpful at all times and most importantly this hotel really is, ‘location location location’ when it comes to this side of Crete!
